The original 1973 wiring plan for Gibson Ripper L9-S bass guitar, designed by Bill Lawrence. The circuit itself did not change throughout the course of production, though different potentiometers were fitted at different times. See circuit photographs | potentiometer details | description of controls

Bill Lawrence had been experimenting with LCR networks since the 1960s, resulting in the Q-filter (short for EQ filter) used on the Ripper and L6-S six string in 1973. In essence, an inductor filters midrange output, i.e. the mid control. The image to the left shows some of Bill Lawrence's early notes on the Gibson Ripper circuitry - at this stage, the mid control is named "Q-tone". Note also varitone position 1 is neck pickup alone. Production Rippers did not have such a setting (see description of controls) though some of the early prototype Rippers may well have done.
