Gibson bass guitar part descriptions

The cutaways on EB0, EB3, Melody Maker and SB series basses of the 1960s and 70s did vary over the years. These changes are very subtle, and generally are in size and shape of the bevel - rather than depth of the cutaway itself. Some variations are shown here - it may actually be that there are more - if you have a Gibson SG-style bass with different cutaways than shown here please let me know

1970-71 Comparitively light bevelling of the cutaway - common in later slotted headstock basses

1971-74 In the early seventies several basses were shipped with no bevelling of the cutaways at all (and in a few cases none anywhere - just a slab body). These were generally an attempt to reduce production costs, and were often paired with front mounted (via) a control plate circuitry and an alder body. This was a standard feature on SB series bass guitars, but also occasional EB series guitars.

1972 A distinctively wide bevel that does not extend as far as the neck itself - seen on the very earliest maple-necked EB basses, but rarely. 1972 only.
