The Gibson G-3 bass has 2 control knobs, which are self explanatory (Volume and Tone) and one three position pickup selector switch. The pickups are all single-coil design, but wired into a humbucking configuration. As such, respective pickup heights can have a big input on overall tone.
Soundclips were recorded on a 1976 maple bodied G3 fitted with GHS Flea Signature roundwounds, plugged directly into a mobilePre preamp.
The switch positions are as described below with each soundclip. Descriptions are taken from the 1978 Gibson G3 controls flyer.
The G-3 switch positions
Forward position
activates the front and middle pickups in humbucking configuration. Clips played finger style, vol 10, tone 10, then tone 0
Back position
activates the middle and back pickup in the same manner. Played with a pick, vol 10, tone 10
Middle position
activates all three pickups for what we have coined a 'buck-and-a-half'; played finger style, vol 10, tone 10
