Review of a classic Gibson

The EB bass mute was designed by Gibson foreman/engineer Larry Allers. It was available from mid 1960, and especially designed for the Gibson EB2 and Gibson EB0 basses.

Gibson were obviously finding their humbucker equipped basses too clear sounding (!) and so they developed a mute to 'muffle' the tone.

Gibson first filed for an electric bass mute patent in April 1960; and put out the following announcement shortly afterwards.

Taken from Gibson Gazette, July/August 1960.

Gibson Gazette - July/August 1960
Mute Developed for Electric Bass

That muted or muffled tone so many bassists desire can now be obtained through the simple addition of a wonderful new gadget by Gibson.

It's a small unit that is mounted on top of the bass guitar just in front of the bridge, and held in place by three screws. By pulling a small lever that extends underneath the bridge, it brings up an arm that is padded and this mutes the strings from the underside. A sheet of instruction is enclosed with each unit, or it can be installed at the factory on any new bass order.

Every player of a Gibson electric bass will want to add this "string dampener" to his instrument. It provides unique tonal effect, and is another "first" from Gibson. Retail price—$12.50.
