Gibson SB-300 and SB-400 single-coil pickup

Gibson bass guitars | Part descriptions | Pickups | Gibson SB-300 and SB-400 single-coil pickup

The SB-300/400 were the first Gibson basses to feature single coil pickups. Also used in the SG-100, SG-200, SG-250 and ES-320 guitars. Gibson part number 13570 (front and back pickups identical). Stylistically they borrow from the Les Paul low-impedance pickups used over the previous years: black plastic, with embossed Gibson logo, rounded ends with matching chrome plated mounting-ring.

The second images shows the top view of the disassembled pickup. The simple black plastic cover has the old-style scripted Gibson logo. This cover simply attaches to the black plastic base-plate to make the complete pickup, which mounts to the chrome surround with two further screws, as pictured.

When disassembled it is easy to see how simple this pickup is (see image 3): a single coil pickup with magnetic strip in the centre of the bobbin. This attaches to the black plastic bassplate with two screw, and the whole unit is mounted to the guitar body with two further (spring-loaded) screws.

Typical resistance of this pickup is around 7kΩ.
