RD77 was simply an early name for the RD series. In 1979 the were updated and named RD79 - the guitars had a shorter scale, but the basses kept their 34 1/2" scale. The basses had some changes however - primarily the arrangement of switches that controlled the bass, but also different finish options. Functionally there was no difference.
